Personal Technology Toolkit

Since my last PC got a virus which completely ended its existence, I ended buying a PC every two years and bought a Macbook pro last October. It has allowed me to think about different technologies in a new light. I never wanted to get an iPhone or a Mac because I just didn't understand why one was better than the other. When I was 17 I wanted an iPod like the rest of the world, my dad (an IT specialist and loyal PC owner) bought me a Zune. Having anything Mac was just not an option. Now that I know both, I feel that one isn't particularly better than another, they are just different. (although Mac's don't get viruses and crash like my last 3 computers) I was really intimidated when first learning about everything from Snow Leopard to Safari, but its just a new way of doing things. When I think about the knowledge I have when it comes to web technology, I feel like its an unexplored area thats just like me figuring out the Mac. I feel like it took me a long time to switch because I was so comfortable using PC that I didn't want to travel outside my comfort zone. So, this is a main motivator for me exploring web design. I have always been interested in it, I just am intimidated. I'm ready to upgrade my toolkit.

  1. Hi Katie, It's definitely hard in the PC vs. Mac ring. However, both are moving towards each other in the helpful ways, like design software works just a well on a PC that it does a Mac (thankfully b/c that's what a lot of in-house designers are on, like me). But they are moving in their own unique directions too, like the iPad. My mom was always a Mac fan so that's what I grew up with. After years of Mac products, I only have one recommendation: never buy first generation Mac products. The first generations always seem like it's the trial run - then the 2nd or 3rd generation products have all the kinks out. Good luck! - Brooke

  2. Hi Katie! I was a PC user for many years. My first computer in my household as a teen was a Sony Vaio(super slow), ten a Dell Laptop(crashed) and lastly a HP Laptop(now super slow). My college roommate was a bit of a designer ad an avid Mac user and I was like "WHAT IS THAT"? I had never even heard of a MAC, go figure. I was so not in the loop. But as I got to see how her computer worked and all the wonderful design aspects you could do with it I was in aw! A few years ago I purchased my first iMac and now also own a MacBook Pro. As a student at Columbia I got first hand knowledge how to use a Mac and have loved them ever since. In the beginning all I knew and loved were PC's but I am fully converted. I still love using Microsoft on a PC because it is second nature to me. The great thing is with programs like Parallels, VirtualBox and Fusion you can use Windows programs on your MAC. I have yet to try one yet but this may give us both the best of both worlds.

  3. I have refused to go to a Mac mainly because I also have grown up with only PCs. I am actually thinking of possibly getting a Mac as my next computer (possibly)and it puts me at ease to hear that so many programs are available especially for microsoft software.
